I Know, I Know

from Sweet Side by Raquel Rodriguez

about

Amber Navran and I have been friends since we went to music school together at USC in Los Angeles. I’ve shared a lot of my emotions and feelings with her over the past 10 years and recently, I struggled trying to voice how I felt about a particular event. I often feel like the people in my close circle have great intentions but sometimes make the wrong decisions when trying to execute those intentions. I had this issue with my parents. When talking with Amber about it, she could sense how strongly I felt about this issue but also sensed that I wasn’t coming from a place of anger, yet trying to find a place of gratitude and acceptance when things don’t always go my way. I know it’s important to take responsibility of your own life, but I also know how important it is to have a solid support team, even when they make mistakes. Despite these mistakes, I know that I need these people in my life and I know I would prefer the few mistakes over being alone when I need support the most.

Working with Amber on this tune was easy and so fulfilling. She's an incredible musician and her style of beat making has grown on me very fast. Her band Moonchild, performed at the same cruise festival that I did, (The Capital Jazz Supercruise) in January 2020 and we first started writing the song while at sea. We listened to Amber’s beat in our small cabin as I voiced my feelings in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. She came back with a full song a month later and I immediately recorded vocals and felt so relieved that the feelings I was trying to communicate came across as non-confrontational.

lyrics

I KNOW I KNOW LYRICS

So you didn’t think to ask about
Some things never change
My hurricane with intentions
Nothing ever stands in your way

Playing the same game
I’m still fighting twice the battle
I’ve been tired and insane (going insane)
But I know it’s nothing I can’t handle

I know, I know nobody makes it on their own
On their own
Oh I know, I know I’d take this over being alone
Being alone
I know, I know nobody makes it on their own
On their own
I know, I know I’m grateful not to face it alone
Alone

Why you always gotta ask about it
What’s that ever changed
Acting like you got good intentions
Everybody’s gotta do it your way

Playing the same game
I’ve been fighting twice the battle
Still here tired and insane
Truth is, it’s nothing I can’t handle

I know, I know nobody makes it on their own
On their own
Oh I know, I know I’d take this over being alone
Alone
I know, I know nobody makes it on their own
On their own
Oh I know, I know I never wanna do this alone
Ohhh
I know, I know nobody makes it on their own
I can’t make it on my own
Oh I know, I know
