Let Me Remind You

about

After the release of 'Sweet Side,' I took time away from my music career to allow the album to breathe and find its own space. This album represented some of my best work, and the thought of following it up with new music felt intimidating. Instead, I decided to immerse myself in house-life, spending time cooking, gardening in my backyard, and learning how to grow my own food. Stepping away from the music scene was refreshing but I started to miss the creative process. Somewhere along the way, though, I convinced myself that my time in music had passed.

The inspiration for 'Let Me Remind You' came when I began to remember the days when I wasn’t afraid to dream big. I used to gaze at the LA skyline and the city lights, envisioning a future where my music would be known throughout the city. I had lost sight of that determination and self-confidence, but this song became a way to reconnect with my old self, the strong and confident girl who wasn’t afraid of the world. Now, when I drive around, it reminds me that just like my city, even though things are constantly changing, at the core, we’ve still got that same heart and soul.

The music for 'Let Me Remind You' originated from a spontaneous jam session that took place on April 20th, 2019. During this period, the Australian producer MXXWLL was residing in our back house, and he invited his friend, Grammy award-winning producer Linden Jay, to Blue Dream Studios to collaborate on music. Linden also brought along bass player Stuart Zender, a founding member of the band Jamiroquai. That night, SammyB, Linden, MXXWLL, and Stuart created multiple jam sessions, which SammyB later sampled to craft the intro for 'Let Me Remind You.' He then built a track around the chord progressions from that jam, and songwriter Jess Best and I penned almost the entire song during a single writing session. The overall production draws inspiration from the vibes of Los Angeles, incorporating elements of West Coast hip-hop, orchestral strings, vintage Fender Suitcase Rhodes, synthesizers, and guitar.

lyrics

Something ‘bout the way that I can’t see your eyes
Something ‘bout yourself that gets you down
Such a shame ‘cause you look so damn good tonight
Come with me, don’t have to talk it out

I’ll take you where the lights run the avenue
For a night time rendezvous
It’s the same city, different view
Let me remind you
Watch how the colors fade
While the sun sets the same old way
Baby some shit’ll never change
Let me remind you
Let me remind, let me remind you

See a moment in a photo want it back
Why you always wanting what you’re not
That perfect version of yourself stays in the past
I’ll be here to show you what you got right now

I’ll take you where the lights run the avenue
For a night time rendezvous
It’s the same city, different view
Let me remind you
Watch how the colors fade
While the sun sets the same old way
Baby some shit’ll never change
Let me remind you
Let me remind, let me remind you

Do you remember the feeling you had
On the days when you knew what you wanted
(When you knew what you wanted)
When you knew who you were
(And you knew who you were)

I’ll take you where the lights run the avenue (let me take you baby)
For a night time rendezvous (on a rendezvous)
It’s the same city, different view (in this same city different view)
Let me remind you
Watch how the colors fade (watch how the colors fade)
While the sun sets the same old way (some shill never change, no)
Baby some shit’ll never change
Let me remind you

I’ll take you where the lights run the avenue
For a night time rendezvous
It’s the same city, different view
Let me remind you (let me remind you)
Watch how the colors fade (while they fade away)
While the sun sets the same old way (in the same old way)
Baby some shit’ll never change
Let me remind you
